Home Medi Spa Treatments Photodynamic Therapy

It has lately been found that Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), with the use of topical photosensitizers (5 Aminolevulinic Acid or Ala) and light sources, can treat a variety of skin conditions including the visible signs of the photo aged skin (dry and rough elastotic skin, telengiectases, dyschromia, lentigines and rhytides), actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, bowen disease, koposis sarcoma, psoriasis, acne, warts and skin metastasis. It can also be used for permanent hair removal.

PDT is also useful in the prevention of certain types of skin cancer as it allows for the treatment of an entire area of sun damaged skin and will, consequently, destroy even undetected cancerous or pre-cancerous cells. On the other hand, conventional methods, such as cryosurgery (freezing with liquid nitrogen) and burning, only treat visible problems, potentially missing the less obvious ones.

The ALA cream applied on the area to be treated penetrates the stratum corneum and is exclusively absorbed by the affected cells. When it accumulates in sufficient quantity it is transformed into PpIX (Protoporfirine). The penetrating effect of ALA cream into the affected area is checked by a special test called the fluorescence test and when the result is satisfactory the treatment area is exposed to an infrared light source at the specific wavelength of 630nm.

We are using the CKD PDT 100 (EPEM) LED source which allows a sensor to measure the energy emitted taking into account the distance and, therefore, automatically delivers the desired dose.

Photodynamic therapy is a non painful treatment which leaves no scarring, has low downtime and offers excellent cosmetic response.
