Cheek Augmentation

Prominent cheek bones have long been considered as one of the signs of beauty. Additionally, as we age, our face tends to lose some of its fullness, making it appear to sag or appear drawn and gaunt. Plastic surgery offers solutions to enhance the shape and size of your cheekbones and, therefore, restore the fullness of your face and give you a more youthful appearance.

There are several available options for cheek augmentation including, surgery and injectable fillers.

Different temporary, semipermanent or permanent Injectable fillers can be used to augment the cheek. The filler is placed without any kind of anaesthesia usually on the periosteum of the malar bone. The procedure is simple.

For surgical cheek, or malar as it is medically called, augmentation the surgeon will, in most cases, use implants made of solid silicone. These implants come in various shapes and sizes, and most can be custom shaped to a particular facial structure. Silicone implants do not integrate with tissue and can be easily removed at a later date. Other cheek bone implants, such as hydroxyapatite implants, integrate with natural bone tissue and become part of the cheek structure. Consequently such implants cannot be removed.

When cheek implants are placed in conjunction with another facial plastic surgery procedure such as a face lift, brow lift, rhinoplasty or blepharoplasty, the implants can be inserted through the incisions made for those procedures. When not used in conjunction with other plastic surgery treatments, the cheek implants are placed on their own through small incisions made in the mouth, in front of the ear or lower eyelids. The implants are then placed into small pockets formed by the surgeon in the cheek tissue and then close the incision with very fine stitches.

This procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and requires an overnight stay in hospital. Stitches used to close the incision are removed in 7 to 10 days.
